Welcome to Cumbria Psychotherapy and Counselling
I am Carmen Docton, a Clinical Integrative Psychotherapist and member of the Humanistic and Integrative College of the UKCP.
I am Carmen Docton, a Clinical Integrative Psychotherapist and member of the Humanistic and Integrative College of the UKCP.
I offer face to face or online therapy for individuals and couples of 18 years and over. Most of my work is in person, however for some online working is more convenient and I find this is a good alternative to working face to face.
My consulting room is in Carlisle. There is disabled access and a small amount of parking.
Online and telephone appointments are available Monday - Thursday, 08:30-17:30.
My belief is that we are all born with the potential to live full and satisfying lives. Sometimes difficult life experiences, traumas or uncertainties leave us feeling alone, demoralised and negative. Therapy or counselling can help us to regain our equilibrium, restoring faith in ourselves and helping us to build stronger relationships with the people around us.
I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. This means I am trained in a number of theories for example developmental, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and attachment theories. The breadth of this training allows me to use a variety of approaches with my clients, so that I can individually tailor therapy to suit your personal needs.
I will listen and support you to share what is troubling you.
We will work together psychoanalytically using Transactional Analysis. Many clients also choose to include creative approaches like imagery, music, dreamwork, bodywork or art to enable deeper self exploration. Often we will explore your past and how it affects your current struggles .
As an Integrative Therapist, I encourage clients to be brave and try new things in therapy knowing it is a safe and confidential environment.
We will work to a contract that we agree together after an initial assessment. The contract will be a description of the problem you wish to resolve and how we have agreed to work towards this. We will regularly evaluate together how therapy is progressing. Individual work may be short term or long term depending on your needs. Couples therapy is short term of assessment plus 8 sessions.
Our work together will be strictly confidential and bounded by rules of Professional conduct laid out by UKCP.
Some people know why they want counselling or therapy. I work with clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, bereavement, caring responsibilities, childhood trauma and abuse, domestic abuse, overeating, self harm, gender dysphoria and workplace conflict. I am experienced working with Neurodivergent individuals.

Sometimes we are simply aware of feeling "not myself" or "unable to cope" or are having difficulty managing emotions or relationships. Therapy can help you to explore and clarify your difficulties. Process issues from your past and build your self knowledge: identifying your personal strengths to help you move forward in a new way
I understand that coming to counselling or therapy can feel very daunting. It is important that you feel comfortable and happy with your choice of therapist. For this reason, I offer a reduced rate for an initial session so we can meet and you can ask any questions you have. This will help us to decide if we feel we can work together
